A truly unique region, very rugged and not spoiled by human touch with a simple name. Cooktown is not very explored and still considered a true wilderness area, one of the worlds best.

The Cape shares with its visitors a relatively undisturbed coastal environment. A region that offers a unique look at some for the most incredible species of tropical birds as well. An area with a long Aboriginal history, Cooktown was named after Captain James Cook, explorer and navigator who founded the region and serves as home to not only some of the most incredible natural habitats, but also an incredible area full of archaeological finds, with artifacts that date back about 30,000 years.

Back in the day, Cooktown was a thriving gold mining location, but currently serves as a quiet and serene setting for natives and visitors to soak up the natural beauty and historical significance of the region. The Cape region is a wilderness area and is more a vacation spot for the adventurer than the person looking for 5 star accommodations. There are few modern amenities in this region, but it is an area that can allow for some of the most amazing experiences you can imagine.

Nestled in the region are the Torres Strait Islands, and of the 100 islands only 19 are inhabited. Thursday Island is the administration island, the center of the chain so to speak. The Torres Islanders are friendly people who are very spiritual and love dancing, fishing and arts and crafts. They make incredible head dresses.

This area of Cape York, Cooktown and Torres Island offers the visitor the opportunity to learn about the heritage of the people and the history of the area. This area does have some restrictions on alcohol due to the indigenous people, but they offer museums and tours for you to discover all there is to know. This area is more for an adventurous person looking for the nature and wanting to know the people.
