It seems most marriage advice and problems are aimed at and experienced by the under forty group. Since our lifespan is increasing there are many people who are still married as they age and there are many new stressors for this time of life.

Sure if you have been with the same person for this many years, then you are not apt to get divorced, but a lot of renegotiating has to be done when you are aging into a place where health issues, retirement issues, and financial problems can play a big role. As you are both aging and maturing there are many issues that can affect how you are relating to one another.

Retirement is a huge issue for older couples, it's a real lifestyle change when both people are now in the home all day. There may be problems as people get bored after having been participating in a more active life while working. These frustrations can lead to marriage problems but it can be tempered by having some type of plan for retirement instead of just letting it happen.

The problem of an incapacitated spouse and caregiving by the other partner is another big issue facing older couples. This can happen to young people too but is common in the older crowd. This requires a support system to be able to get through it whether it be family, friends or a community group of some kind. Through this support the caretaker can talk and vent and be able to get out of the house on a periodic basis. With these escapes it helps the caregiver maintain the love and caring to maintain a healthy relationship even through terrible sickness.

Not all change is bad, but it requires adapting to circumstances and functioning through the love that you have for one another. Keeping focused on the love will help you through whatever life has in store.
