Mounting a HDTV on the factory stand is usually a no go with newer entertainment centers, besides you usually want to use that area for additional components or game consoles or something decorative. In addition putting it up on the wall is more aesthetically pleasing as it raises it to a higher eye level.

The idea of mounting that beautiful, expensive HDTV five feet in the air on sheer drywall is a bit unnerving, though. Images of two thousand dollar flat screen HDTVs falling to their death are not pleasant, to say the least, especially for those of us who cannot afford to just go out and buy another. Also, the backs of some HDTVs look completely different than others, and it's not always easy, or even possible, to find a wall mount made specifically for a single model of TV. This is why it is so important to use the right wall mounts for your HDTV.

The first thing one should do when looking to purchase an HDTV wall mount is try to find one that matches their model exactly. The model can typically be found on the back of the television, and may be a mix of letters and numbers, usually including the size of the TV in it somewhere. If you find a string of numbers and letters that include "42" in it, and you have a 42 inch television, then you can be pretty sure you've found the model number. A quick Google search of the number will give you an idea; if it brings up tons of results with people talking about your TV, or even a picture of your TV, then it is most assuredly the model number. There may be a longer string of letters and numbers associated with the model as well, but generally taking the shortest part of the model number that includes your television's size will give the best results when searching for wall mounts.

When you do the search put in the model number along with the words wall mount. This should find it for you, but there other techniques to use. If you bought it online go back to that website and they'll probably have a wall mount for your specific HDTV. If you bought it at a brick and mortar store in your community call them and see if they have a wall mount for your television model. Last resort is calling the manufacturer to inquire about the specific mount.

Generic wall mounts should be the very last choice, only if all attempts to locate the custom mount have failed. If you have to buy generic check all your measurements numerous times to be sure it will fit. When you think you have it up on the wall securely then pull on the TV some to doublecheck the weight capability of the mount. You sure don't want it to fall off that wall because the mount was made for a lighter HDTV!
